What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any issue that can’t wait for a regular appointment. The most common emergencies include:
- Severe toothache or persistent pain: Pain that keeps you awake or doesn’t respond to over-the-counter medication
- Knocked-out tooth: Time is critical; we may be able to save it
- Chipped, cracked, or broken tooth: Especially if the crack is deep or causing pain
- Abscess or infection: Swelling in your gum or face, often with fever
- Bleeding that won’t stop: From your gums, tongue, or cheek
- Lost filling or crown: Leaving the tooth exposed and sensitive
- Broken denture, bridge, or implant: Affecting your ability to eat or speak
If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us. We’ll ask a few questions and let you know the best course of action.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency: A Quick Guide
Knocked-Out Tooth
Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root. Rinse gently with water if dirty, but don’t scrub or remove any tissue fragments. If you can, place the tooth back in its socket.
If not, keep it in milk or your own saliva (have the patient spit into a cup). Get to our Dallas practice within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving it. Call us on your way so we can prepare.
Severe Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm water. Floss gently to remove any trapped food between teeth. Take over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen.
Never place aspirin directly on your gum or tooth. It can burn the soft tissue. If pain persists for more than a day or is severe, call us immediately for an appointment.
Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth
Rinse with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. If you find the broken piece, bring it with you. Small chips may be cosmetic, but deep cracks that reach the nerve need urgent care. Avoid chewing on that side until we see you.
Abscess or Infection
This is serious. An abscess is a pocket of pus caused by bacterial infection. Signs include throbbing pain, swelling in your gum or face, fever, and a bad taste in your mouth. An abscess can spread to other parts of your body if untreated.
Rinse with mild salt water, but don’t delay. Infections need treatment immediately. If you have swelling with fever or difficulty breathing, go to the nearest emergency room.
Lost Filling or Crown
Save the crown if you have it. Over-the-counter dental cement (available at most pharmacies) can temporarily cover the area, but don’t try to glue the crown back yourself. Using the wrong adhesive can damage the tooth. Call us to have it properly cleaned and recemented.
Bleeding That Won’t Stop
Apply gentle but firm pressure with clean gauze or a damp tea bag (the tannic acid can help the clot form). If bleeding continues for more than 10-15 minutes, or if you have a fever, difficulty breathing, or feel faint, go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
Emergency Care Without the Fear
We know dental emergencies are stressful. The pain, the uncertainty, and the worry are a lot to handle.
For patients with dental anxiety or those needing extensive emergency treatment, Dr. Huckin offers sedation dentistry options to help you stay comfortable and relaxed. You don’t have to suffer through fear while getting the care you need.
Just let us know when you call if anxiety is a concern. We’ll make sure your emergency visit is as calm and pain-free as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Emergencies
What is considered a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any condition that needs rapid care to prevent further injury, stop severe pain, or save a tooth. Examples include knocked-out teeth, severe toothaches, abscesses with swelling, deep cracks, and bleeding that won’t stop. If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us. We’ll ask a few questions and help you decide.
How quickly can you see me for a dental emergency?
We prioritize emergency patients. In most cases, we can see you the same day you call. Call us at 214-216-6577, explain your situation, and we’ll find the earliest possible slot. If you’re in severe pain, tell our team, and we’ll do everything we can to get you in immediately.
Can you save a knocked-out tooth?
Yes, if you act quickly. The best chance of saving a knocked-out tooth is within 30 minutes. Handle the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Don’t scrub it. If you can, place it back in the socket. If not, keep it in milk or your saliva until you reach our office. Call us on your way so we can prepare for your arrival.
Do I need to go to the ER or a dentist for a dental emergency?
This depends on the situation. For severe dental pain, broken teeth, or knocked-out teeth, a dentist is the right choice. We have the tools and training to save your tooth.
Go to the ER if you have difficulty breathing, severe swelling that’s spreading to your neck or eye, uncontrolled bleeding, or life-threatening injuries. The ER can treat pain and infection, but cannot perform dental procedures such as reimplanting a tooth.
Can an emergency dentist remove a tooth?
Yes, an emergency dentist can remove a tooth if it’s necessary to stop pain or prevent the spread of infection. This is typically done within 24 to 48 hours. Tooth extractions are considered emergencies when the patient is in excruciating pain, has a severe crack that extends below the gum line, or has an abscess that can’t be treated with a root canal.
Is a cavity a dental emergency?
We typically consider a cavity an emergency only if you’re experiencing severe pain or swelling. However, you should still schedule an appointment to address the cavity as soon as possible. What starts as a small cavity can become an emergency if left untreated. It can spread to the nerve and cause an abscess. Early treatment is always easier and less expensive.
Do swollen gums require emergency care?
You may need emergency care if you have swollen gums with severe pain and a fever. This combination often indicates a dental abscess. However, you don’t need emergency care for gingivitis, bleeding, and sensitive gums without severe pain or fever. While you should schedule an appointment for a thorough cleaning, gum inflammation alone is not an emergency.
Is an emergency dentist more expensive than regular care?
Emergency visits may have different fees than scheduled preventive visits because they require immediate accommodation and often same-day availability. However, treating an emergency early is almost always less expensive than waiting. A simple filling today can prevent a root canal or extraction tomorrow. We provide clear cost estimates before any treatment begins, so there are no surprises.
Do you accept emergency walk-ins?
We strongly recommend calling ahead so we can prepare for your arrival and ensure we have time for you. However, we understand emergencies don’t always happen at convenient times. Call us at 214-216-6577, and we’ll let you know as soon as we can see you. If you show up without calling, we’ll do our best to fit you in, but calling first is always faster.
What should I bring to my emergency appointment?
Bring your photo ID, dental insurance card (if you have one), and a list of any medications you’re taking. If you have a knocked-out tooth, bring it with you in milk or saliva. If you have X-rays from another dentist, bring those as well. And bring a list of questions because we want you to feel fully informed before any treatment begins.
Don’t Wait, Call Now!
Tooth pain doesn’t get better on its own. Infections don’t go away without treatment. And waiting rarely makes a dental emergency easier or less expensive to fix.
